12 Sep Increasing Immigrant Protections Following DACA Decision
Last week, we took the first steps towards increasing protections and resources for immigrants in the City of Los Angeles. First, the City Council Committee on Immigrant Affairs, Civil Rights and Equity heard a powerful presentation by the City’s Immigrant Advocate Peter Schey on strategies for a comprehensive human rights law and a “know your rights” shield. His recommendations will be studied by the City in the coming weeks to determine the best policy options moving forward. The following day, I joined Councilmember Gil Cedillo in co-authoring a resolution that would declare Los Angeles a sanctuary city. These are the first procedural steps towards providing Angelenos with the legislation and legal resources necessary to protect themselves and their loved ones.
