Last week, the Los Angeles Olympic Bid Committee announced a deal with the International Olympic Committee to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. While this is not the year our city originally bid on, we are excited for this opportunity to once again bring the Games back to Los Angeles. It is an immense privilege to be considered to host any Olympics, and this is a historic moment that will be felt by Angelenos for generations to come. Wherever these Games go, a profound sense of aspiration follows. L.A.’s young athletes can now dream of competing in an Olympics in their hometown.
Two years ago nobody could have predicted that the Games would be returning to the City of Angels. The words “Olympics” and “Los Angeles had not been said in the same sentence for 30 years. The people of Los Angeles entrusted us to push the envelope not the status quo, and LA2028 is proof that dreaming big pays off.
Council President Wesson and members of the Ad Hoc Olympics committee have been working closely with the LA2028 Bid committee, the Chief Legislative Analyst, the City Administrative Officer, and the City Attorney to ensure the new deal is thoroughly vetted and reviewed. City Council will make a final decision on Friday, August 11.
