Per city statute, councilmembers must elect a Council President every two years. July 1 marks the first day of Councilmembers Harris-Dawson and Ryu
LOS ANGELES – In the first official order of business tomorrow councilmembers will elect a Council President from among their peers to serve in the powerful position. The Council President presides over all City Council meetings, formulates committee assignments and appoints the president pro tempore and assistant president pro tempore. The Council President serves as mayor in the mayor’s absence.
In addition to the election, July 1 marks the first day as an elected official for new members, Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson and David Ryu. Ryu is the first Korean-American City Councilmember to be elected in Los Angeles history. Both have been elected to serve four year terms.
